UN Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Prior to Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his presidential meeting next week.

Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, concluding 13 years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and supportive states for their support the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The pair met for the first time in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. This past fall, he made history as the initial Syrian president to address the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.

  • President Sharaa addresses UN General Assembly for first time after nearly six decades
  • The high-level talks with Sharaa, previously unimaginable, elevates national expectations
