The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story
In this cartoon journey for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
