The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Drop Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to Your World
The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had already known it was time for a new weapon.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," stated a lead developer. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the use case."
If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a primary applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it needs to become an Olympic sport without delay.
Another significant inclusion in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for a breath.
The remaining new features are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've pondered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also introduce something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for underwater mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus concept art looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the Parched, desert-exclusive skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated changes to riding horses. Now, you can ford bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now available at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts update is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
