Doris Included in Ireland Team But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad announcement news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy is absent.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players set to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and played in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris if the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
